The BEAT THE DEADLINE 5K benefits the ongoing work of the National Press Club Journalism Institute. The Institute is committed to the future of journalism by helping working journalists improve their skills through ongoing training and programming through scholarships that promote diversity within our profession, and through the promotion of press freedom worldwide.
Since 2000, and with the help of the runners and sponsors, more than $800,000 has been raised to help deserving students to attend college and pursue a career in journalism.

Race Begins
Immediately following the race, all runners are invited to the National Press Club Ballroom for the NPC Health & Fitness Fair, post-race pancake breakfast and awards ceremony.

Tony Horton
The 5K Committee welcomes exercise trainer Tony Horton, creator of the P90X extreme fitness program, as this year's honorary Race Marshall. Horton has trained professional athletes, U.S. military personnel, members of Congress and celebrities such as Bruce Springsteen, Usher, Tom Petty, Billy Idol, and Annie Lennox. 5K Race Shirts
All registered runners will receive one shirt as part of their entry, but this year we have a choice of two different styles. For an additional donation of $10, runners can get both shirts while supporting a great cause.

This year the Club and the Institute have put a bright spotlight on the cause of Jason Rezaian, the Washington Post reporter who is held in Tehran. The NPC has been part of a team of organizations that have helped work and advocate for Jason’s freedom. To help build awareness of Jason’s case we teamed up with Michael Cavna of the Washington Post to create a special limited edition tee shirt incorporating Cavna's special artwork which uses one line marking every day Jason has been held in prison. We think this will add a powerful message to this year’s race. Runners will be given the option to receive this shirt when they register or get both shirts for a $10 donation to library. Runners and supporters may also purchase extra shirts to distribute at their organizations if they wish. Shirts will be made in a limited quantity, so make sure your reserve your t-shirt when registering for the race.
